Thanatopsis

Watch Film

Release Year: 1962

Director: Ed Emshwiller

Review: The title roughly translates to "Meditation on Death".  Knowing this before viewing the film helps, a lot.  Taken at face value, its a grating, surreal, compilation of gloom and blurry dancing.  The sound is star in this piece.  Using a mix of a heartbeat and a buzz saw creates tension and impending doom, which is fitting given the title.  While watching the film I had no idea what Emshwiller was going for, which I think is a pitfall.  Once I understood what he was trying to convey I appreciated it a bit more, but its still not enough to save this bizarre short.
