World's Greatest Dad

Release Year: 2009
Review: Robin Williams plays a struggling writer who is a single father to an unpopular, perverted, and all around detestable teenage son. It's difficult to write a review for this movie without spoiling it. Suffice it to say, William's character has an opportunity to further his writing career at the expense of his son and the mental anguish he would go through if he went through with it. I really enjoyed the premise, both being edgy and thought provoking. Unfortunately the execution was garbage. The dialog was sloppy, the acting terrible, and scenes were cookie-cutter by design. Outside of Williams, the actors were pretty painful to watch, seemingly just reading the lines from the script with absolutely no emotion. In a lot of regards it reminded me of another film which I had very similar problems with in 'Paranoid Park', only that at least had good direction to back itself up. The supporting characters here were flat and stereotypical. Most of the movie takes place in a high school and it managed to use every cliche about each social group. There could have been much more to this film, but the writing and directing of Bobcat Goldthwait was just too weak to capitalize. For most of the film it manages to teeter on the edge of being compelling, but by the end it completely falls apart into an unsalvageable mess.
