The Ugly Truth

Release Year: 2009
Review: 'The Ugly Truth' suffers from one of the worst symptoms of any bad romantic comedy, where it reinforces bad stereotypes. Both the lead characters are extremist versions of the typecast gender role. Gerard Butler plays the rugged, heartless womanizer and Katherine Heigl, the uptight hopeless romantic, and both are utterly detestable. What the film boils down to are two unlikable characters who have little redeeming characteristics lowering themselves to even further lows while falling in love with each other. Oh, and there are a few crude jokes strewn in just to remind us that we are suppose to find the entire thing funny. It's hard for a romantic comedy to work when you don't want the romance to succeed, and since there isn't a lot to laugh at it, doesn't leave much to enjoy.
