Madame Sata

Release Year: 2002
Review: This Brazilian film follows the life of João Francisco dos Santos or "Madame Sata" (Madam Satan), a low-life criminal homosexual in Rio De Janeiro. It is a fascinating look at the life of someone so afflicted by so many different passions. The acting by Lázaro Ramos is superb and the director, Karim Ainouz, did a great job as well. I watched this movie knowing nothing about the plot, actors or anything else about the movie. I thought for sure that it was shot in the the 1970's at the latest. The way the movie is shot is important in engrossing yourself in the 1930 grittiness of the Rio De Janeiro underworld, so it was a job well done. This movie probably isn't something you'd go for if you just want some light entertainment for the evening, but if you are in the mood for something a little less conventional and certainly emotional, I would recommend it.
