Adventureland

Release Year: 2009
Review: This isn't the next 'Superbad', as the trailers would like you to believe. 'Adventureland' is a much more subdued teen drama set in the 80's. It perfectly captures the angst of a young adult trying to figure what to do with his life. It's unfortunate that this film got compared to 'Superbad', since this is not trying to be the same kind of movie. It's also easy to compare Jesse Eisenberg, who plays the lead, to Michael Cera since both play a similar awkward, yet kind, guy. Eisenberg has more of an intellectual vibe to him however, and it works well in this role, where the character has just graduated from college and is having real life hit him hard. Kirsten Stewart was the real key to making the story work. Her performance was believable and her chemistry with everyone else in the cast made the film work. She is asked to convey a complex set of emotions, and she delivers. While the drama aspects are the reason that this film is interesting, it is also funny at times. Most of the laughs come courtesy of Martin Starr who is also fantastic in the film. It doesn't go overboard trying to fulfill a laugh quota, but lets the jokes come naturally. It is a refreshing genre blend which manages to stay fresh despite a familiar plot line.

completely agree, this is so much more than just a silly teen comedy. I think it's one of the most under-appreciated films of the last few years actually. Good to see it getting some love!
